When I grow up…

When I grow up I want to be a fashion designer and live in New York City…. That’s what I 10-year-old self would have told you back in 2001. I think I was in middle school when I lost that vision. In fact, I remember when I lost that vision. I was at Rock Eagle on a 4-H competition trip. I was competing in the Fashion Merchandising and Textiles category. The competition was based on an outfit that each participant made themselves and modeled for the judges at state level. I modeled a denim- knee length skirt and a flannel beauty print poncho. I wish I had a picture to show y’all (LOL). I thought my outfit looked amazing until I saw what I was up against. Everyone else’s outfits looked so perfect to me and I literally had handmade garments. Like, this one girl made a WHOLE wedding dress with a train and all. I’m sitting in front of the judges thinking, “She just know she gon’ win”. At that moment I realized I was jealous of the works of the girls around me and somehow let that discourage me from me dreams of being a fashion designer. After that competition, I stopped trying to make clothes for myself and just stuck to cutting and re-purposing doll clothes.

As an adult it is not easy to define exactly what you want to do when you grow up. At 25 years –old I still have some growing up to do, we all do. So When I grow up what do I want to do, who do I want to be… In middle school I knew I wanted to go to college, I even knew what college I wanted to go to but I wasn’t sure what it was that I wanted to do. Until high school, one of my friends told be I was bossy and I should be a manager because I like telling people what to do. That’s when I started looking into going to school for Business Administration.  In college, I started to explore all my potential career aspirations and goals, and decided to change my major from Business Administration to Marketing. My goal was to work for a consumer packaged good company as a Brand manager (of some sort) for a household name brand. Two and a half years out of undergrad and I am seeking to find that perfect job. But now when people ask me what I want to do beyond that… nothing comes to mind but everything comes to mind. I have no particular plan for my future.

  • I want to someday make Forbes 40 under 40 list
  • I would like to own my own business
  • I enjoy working with kids, so I’d like to host leadership workshops with youth
  • I want to get into event planning and hosting

I want to do all these things but have not clear plan to get me to where I want to be. So when I grow up I want to accomplish all my goals. Today I was reading my daily devotional (I’ll post publishing information below) – but it talks about being a women of purpose and “to be successful you must strategize”. I was really inspired by the 3-minute devotional. So I have decided to jot down everything I want to do in life and start strategizing my plan to accomplish my goals because I am passionate about me. My goal for this year is to figure myself out and make a 3 year plan. To me this is the hardest thing EVER!!!! So this will be a long journey for me but I’ll be sure to share with you all.

Devotional information:

“From God’s word to a woman’s heart” by Janice Hanna

I picked it up from my local Kroger for $4.99- it’s a great daily 3-minute devotional text
